Troubleshooting
Why can't I see someone's TikTok story?
In most cases nothing is broken: the account simply has no active story, because stories expire after 24 hours and most people rarely post them. The other common causes are a private account, a story limited to friends, a mistyped username, a renamed or removed account, and - in viewer tools - a temporary refusal from TikTok.
1. There is no active story right now
This is the most common answer by a wide margin, and it is easy to mistake for a failure.
Stories last 24 hours and then disappear permanently. Most accounts - including very large creators - post stories occasionally or never, so “no active story” is the normal state, not the exception. A quick check: open the profile in TikTok. If there is no ring around the profile picture, there is no active story, and no tool will find one.
If you are after an older story, check whether the creator kept it as a highlight.
2. The account is private
Private accounts publish nothing outside their approved followers, so their stories are not readable by any tool. See why private story viewers cannot work.
3. The story is limited to friends or followers
Creators can choose who sees a story. If it is restricted to friends (people who follow each other), it is never served publicly, even on an otherwise public account - and no viewer can show it.
4. The username is slightly wrong
TikTok handles are easy to mistype, and some mistakes are hard to spot:
- A period in the wrong place, or a missing one -
user.nameandusernameare different accounts. - A trailing underscore that is easy to miss.
- Zero versus the letter O, or 1 versus l.
- The display name rather than the username. The handle is the one starting with @.
Pasting the full profile link avoids all of these - our tools accept a link as readily as a handle. The username finder also confirms whether a handle exists at all.
5. The account was renamed, deactivated or banned
Usernames can be changed, and the old handle stops working immediately. A link saved weeks ago may point at a name nobody holds now.
6. TikTok declined the request for a moment
Occasionally TikTok refuses automated requests for a short while. Waiting a minute and trying again genuinely fixes it. ViewTikStory tells you when that is the case rather than showing a blank page - and the status page shows whether the service is up.
If it is a Note rather than a story
Notes look similar in the app but are a separate feature that viewers cannot read - the full explanation is here.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a TikTok profile have no story?
Usually because there is no active story - stories expire after 24 hours and most accounts rarely post them.
Why can I see a story in the app but not in a viewer?
The story may be limited to friends, the account may be private, or it may be a Note rather than a story. None of those are public.
Why does a story viewer say the account was not found?
The username is probably slightly wrong, or the account was renamed or removed. Paste the profile link instead of typing the name.
Is the story viewer down?
Check the ViewTikStory status page. If it shows everything working, the cause is almost always the account itself.
